1 Criminal-Justice Research Topic Cinthia Bueso The University of Southern Mississippi Research & Planning in Criminal Justice- CJ 420 Katherine A. Meeker, M.A. September 11, 2022 2 A criminal justice-related topic that interests me is the topic on the impact of incarceration on the family, especially the children of imprisoned individuals. The families of incarcerated individuals rarely benefit from general systemic societal mechanisms and receive little personal support compared to crime victims although they bear similarities to direct crime victims (Murray, 2013). The research questions I came up with include, Which individuals in the social care for children of incarcerated people.? As well as how do kinship and foster care influence children of incarcerated individuals? These research questions are important because children of incarcerated individuals face various difficulties and challenges such as antisocial behavior, economic hardship, psychological strain, criminal activity, and suspension or expulsion from school (Moss, 2022). This topic should be investigated through the research questions stated above because it is challenging to discern how a child will grow up when a parent is continually or intermittently imprisoned (Murray, 2013). Although there are mixed results on the children’s risk factors, research suggests that the quality of the family’s and child’s social support system as well as the weakness or strength of the parent-child bond are significant in determining the child’s ability to succeed in life and overcome challenges (Moss, 2022). The research questions will provide critical insight into determining the unique dynamics of the relationship between the success of the child and the incarceration status of the parent. This research impacts the children involved as well as law enforcement, public schools and child welfare agencies (Murray, 2013). 3 References Moss, A. (2022). 1 Probability Sampling Techniques Cinthia Bueso The University of Southern Mississippi Research & Planning in Criminal Justice- CJ 420 Katherine A. Meeker, M.A. October 9, 2022 2 The first probability sampling technique is the stratified sampling method. The method involves getting a representative sample from a population that has been separated into relatively identical strata or subpopulations. To employ this sampling technique, I would first have to divide the diverse population into relatively homogenous factions called strata. I would then draw a random sample from each group and unite them to formulate a complete representative sample. Stratified sampling has various advantages such as it provides precise and accurate estimates for subgroups (Parsons, 2014). When dealing with a relatively homogeneous subpopulation relative to the entire population, more accurate estimates of the subgroups can be gotten through stratified sampling. In addition, stratified sampling ensures efficiency in surveying by simplifying data collection and reducing survey costs (Parsons, 2014). Moreover, explicitly incorporating the strata into the sampling methodology ensures that all groups of interest are represented in the study. Stratified sampling also has certain disadvantages such as it requires the researcher to come up with a scheme for the strata to include all members of the population. Furthermore, stratified sampling might be ineffective if the researchers lack enough information to assign subjects to the correct strata (Parsons, 2014). The second probability technique is cluster sampling which requires populations to be placed into separate groups. A random sample of the groups is then selected to represent a specific population. Cluster sampling has various advantages such as, it reduces the number required to generate accurate data thereby allowing for research to be conducted with a reduced economy. Moreover, when clusters are appropriately put together, they provide a more accurate estimation process thereby reducing variability. Cluster sampling is a more feasible approach since it eliminates the need to manage large data inputs (O’Malley et al., 2020). On the other hand, cluster sampling has certain disadvantages such as it makes it easier for the researcher to 3 come up with biased data. Moreover, the skills of the researcher have a great impact on the information collected through cluster sampling. As such, if the data collection skills of the researcher are subpar, the information collected may be irrelevant. Cluster sampling also needs equality in size for the process to come up with accurate solutions (O’Malley et al., 2020). 4 References O’Malley, A. J., & Park, S. (2020). 1 Impact of incarceration on the family Cinthia Bueso The University of Southern Mississippi Course Name and Code Instructor’s NameSeptember 28, 2022 2 The criminal-related research concept that interests and engages me is the impact of incarceration on the family. Immediate impacts of the loss of parents due to incarceration include social stigma, weakened ties to the parent, feelings of shame, loss of financial support, increased misbehavior, poor academics, and increased risk of neglect or abuse. The research will aim to determine both the negative and positive effects of incarceration on children below 18 years of age. a) Should the age of children be considered during incarceration of a parent or guardian?b) Should female offenders be accorded special treatment when the information they’ve provided is being vetted by law enforcement agencies? Yes or Noc) How reliable are the testimonies of individuals with a higher social status compared to those of low social standing? d) Should psychology doctors be allowed to provide witness testimonies in cases involving their patients who are parents? e) Should the financial stability of a parent be considered during incarceration?f) What is the rate of reliability for the testimonies for individuals with high income compared to those with low income?
