Weekly Articles and Future Improvements

The articles that I have throughout the weeks majorly explore some of the issues that psychiatric nurses face in their wards. This is an issue that is majorly overlooked in many health facilities since many assume that the training that the nurses in these wards have received is enough to get them through the challenges, they face in taking care of psychiatric patients. One of the articles that I summarized the past week highlights some of the challenging experiences as narrated from personal experiences. In the article, it was noted that psychiatric nurses may experience assault or harm from their patients, especially those that are reportedly aggressive (Zarea et al., 2018). Besides that, there is a negative attitude channeled towards psychiatric nurses by their colleagues, family, and patients, which demoralizes them. From the articles, it was also found that the working environment conditions for psychiatric nurses are sometimes dilapidating. Therefore, this is an illustration that there needs to be n improvement in psychiatry clinical practice.

One of the improvements that could benefit the clinical practice is to improve the working conditions or environment for the psychiatry nurses. That is most critical because some nurses who work in psychiatry wards find it challenging to work in the environment, especially dealing with different mental health patients. On that note, there is a need to ensure that psychiatric nurses get all the organizational support they need. For instance, providing psychosocial support to the nurses will ensure that nurses develop more effective coping strategies when working in these settings. Hylen et al. (2018) also identified that organizations should help in reducing violence in psychiatric settings. That is an improvement that could be done as soon as today, because the risk of violence in these settings is high, which results in many nurses fearing the patients, and also a lack of interest in working in these wards.

Another improvement that could be done in the future or as early as possible is to improve the organizational culture. Hylen et al. (2018) showed that an encouraging and supportive work environment could improve the perception of psychiatric nurses toward their work environment. This is something that could start with ward managers who ensure they support psychiatric nurses, which would help nurses cope with the psychosocial stress from their work settings. Organizational culture could also be established to ensure that other nursing and healthcare staffs support psychiatric nurses as much as possible and not show them negative attitudes that could be discouraging. On the other hand, another improvement that I would like to implement in the nearest future is the hiring of enough psychiatric nurses. Zarea et al. (2018) found that there were high levels of burnout in nurses working in psychiatry wards, which led to not only psychological stress but dissatisfaction, thus affecting their performance. Also, the challenges experienced in psychiatry wards the articles read showed that many nurses were not interested in working in these wards, which created a shortage of nurses to provide care for psychiatric patients.

Weekly Articles & Possible Future Improvements

Every aspect of healthcare, but notably nursing, requires research. Nurses can enhance patient care and identify best practices with the use of research. Additionally, research aids nursing in adapting to changes in the regulatory environment, patient demographics, and healthcare system. Nursing practice is always evolving as a result of new findings (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2018). The ability to stay current with nursing innovations helps nurses advance in their jobs because the knowledge acquired can rapidly become out of date. The healthcare field is always changing due to new discoveries and to be able to provide the best care to our patients, it is important to stay updated with the recent research findings.

My priority as a nurse is to provide appropriate patient care. As healthcare professionals, our patients trust us to provide them with the best care possible. They might see us as a reference to teach them how to manage their condition and prevent complications, thus we must continue to conduct research and stay current with new findings and care models. The weekly article summaries have helped me become more aware of changes in the nursing field. I work with patients with chronic conditions, the majority those who have been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus and Heart Failure. My duty is to provide them with the tools and knowledge necessary to manage their condition and prevent complications.

The article I chose for the first article summary assignment discussed diabetes and factors that affect adherence to self-care activities. In this article, I learned that age, education levels, BMI, dietary habits, and illness complications all had an impact on self-care behaviors. I also learned that the behaviors the chosen group of individuals adhered to the least, were blood glucose monitoring, nutrition, and exercise (Portela et al., 2022). This information helped me learn what was necessary for me to implement in my practice, to better help my patients. I believe a more social and demographic-focused assessment needs to be implemented since these factors were found to affect adherence to necessary behaviors. I believe this is something that needs to be implemented as soon as possible. I will now focus my interventions on discussing the importance of blood glucose monitoring and exercise. With the recommendation of the patients’ primary care physicians, an exercise regimen can be provided to the patients as well as a dietary guide.

I would also like to implement that every patient with diabetes receives an educational pamphlet stating the importance of measuring their blood glucose at least 3 times a day and instructions on how to measure it using a glucometer. Another thing I believe it would be beneficial to implement is educational sessions via Zoom that focus on the basic measures needed to prevent complications like how to perform foot care, how to find appropriate fitting diabetic shoes, foods that affect glycemic control, etc. I believe these recommendations need to be implemented as soon as tomorrow. Many times, patients can be scared to ask their health care provider specific questions regarding their diagnoses and as a case manager nurse, I can provide them with the education and tools needed to prevent complications in their health. The implementation of my recommendations, I believe would greatly benefit my patients.
