How to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography

Throughout your studies, you will read many texts and journal articles. In many courses, you will be asked to prepare an annotated bibliography to assist you in preparing key assignments. An annotated bibliography is a writing and research tool that you want to master because it allows you to record important information in a concise and scholarly way quickly.

Begin this process by reading about annotated bibliographies in the Conducting Research and Forms of Writing sections in the Northcentral Academic Success Center (click the links in the left side navigation area of the ASC screen).

You may also find the following links helpful to you in understanding how to compile an annotated bibliography, located under your weekly resources.

After you have completed the annotations, prepare a 1-page summary that includes the following:

  • An overview of the population and the condition that is being assessed
  • A listing and brief description of assessment instruments or methods utilized with this population
  • A description of any validity reliability concerns with the instruments
  • Recommendations regarding the assessment practices and tools one might utilize when assessing this population

Length: Three annotations; 1-page summary

Your identifying info should look like what I typed in. You’re using the wrong margins.

Arlenn, you’re going to see a great deal of color below and it’s because you’re not giving enough specific info. On your second article, you mentioned things that weren’t in the article and I read it. I can’t pass you on this paper, but if you’d like to resubmit for a better grade, that would be OK with me. Just make sure that you address the issues I’ve pointed out. I wouldn’t mind if you chose new articles—just don’t use a book because it’s too much.

Anyway, it’s up to you. Let me know what you decide. If you decide to resubmit, you’ll need to do so by Friday, June 17.

Desmarais, S.L., Johnson, K.L. & Singh, J.P. (2016). Performance of Recidivism Risk

Assessment Instruments in U.S. Correctional Settings. Psychological Services, 13(3), 206- 222. https://doi.org/10.1037/ser0000075. This wasn’t correctly formatted.

The writers discuss the growing number of people in correctional institutions, as well as the difficulties correctional officials have in identifying criminals who seem to be at high risk of reoffending. What are some of the difficulties? To tackle the issues at hand, risk assessment tools are used. Which types of risk assessment tools? Do they work effectively or are they a waste of time? If it’s the latter, why don’t they work? Furthermore, the article describes how studies suggest that the efficiency of the devices be continuously evaluated. Why do the authors think that? In other terms, no one risk assessment is regarded as the most credible. Why?

Arlenn, you need more info about your article.

The systematic professional judgment method It’s structured professional judgment to risk assessment of sex offenders is the topic of this study. This assessment method is utilized to screen for mentally unstable or high-risk complex sexual offenders and prepare for risk management. The paper also discusses how Ddynamic risk and Aactuarial assessment tools may be employed. Which dynamic and actuarial instrument did they examine? Assessments are used to capture and acquire information via interviews, documentation, and tests. Furthermore, the writers emphasize the significance of evaluating sexual growth, What’s sexual growth? The article doesn’t mention it, so I’m unsure what you’re referring to. knowledge, What type of knowledge? desire, What type of desire? The article doesn’t mention that. connections, What type of connections? The article didn’t mention anything about connections. and functionality. Functionality of what? After using evaluation tools, it is critical to understand all of the elements revealed during case preparation. You need to give several examples. Other strategy mentioned in the article is risk management. No, that’s what the article is about! In the very first paragraph it mentions that the article will focus on assessing risk and planning risk management. This  is intended to limit the likelihood and severity of damage to others. Specifically, which assessment instruments did the writers look at?

Arlenn, I looked at the article and it’s both long and in-depth, but it didn’t mention anything about sexual growth, desire, connections, or functionality. The article spoke at length about specific tests but you didn’t give any info at all about any of them.

Baldwin, K. (2015). Sex Offender Management Assessment and Planning Initiative. U.S.

Department of Justice. Retrieved at: https://smart.ojp.gov/somapi/initiative-home. There are 8 chapters for adults and 6 chapter for juveniles. I’m impressed! This isn’t an article but a full report of 327 pages. It must’ve taken a long time to read it. Each chapter has different authors.

This book article discusses the significance of risk assessments amongst sexual offenders. A risk assessment is a detailed mental examination performed to estimate the possibility of recidivism in a sex offender. Furthermore, the paper mentions risk assessment approaches or tools that may be used to evaluate and lead intervention activities. The author proceeds to explain particular measures that are used to estimate the possibility of recidivism. The tools contain the following: (1) Static Risk Assessment Factors, (2) Dynamic Risk Assessment, and (3) Violence Risk Scale: Sexual Offender Version (VRS:SO). What are they? When evaluating sexual offenders, studies doesn’t really advise or support utilizing a singular risk assessment tool. Where does it say that? Is that for juveniles, adults, or both? The article claims that employing Several Risk Assessment tools is preferable than having a single assessment since testing at several levels may boost reliability. Moreover, if there are several explanations for sexual offending behavior, using multiple tools would be considerably superior than using a single evaluation instrument. Comment by cary stacy smith: Why is this capitalized?

Summary

Numerous sexual offenders suffer from pre – existing medical conditions, This isn’t mentioned anywhere in the report, which is strange. such as mental health problems. Risk assessments are detailed psychiatric evaluations aimed to determine the possibility of a sex offender reoffending. To assess the risk that a sexual offender would reoffend, particular tools are used to quantify projected rates of recidivism. Age is an aspect that may be evaluated to determine if an offender is prone to reoffend, Specifically, how would age help determine if someone will reoffend? and the tools are utilized to examine the offender’s recidivism risk accordingly. What tools? Crucial to the evaluation of sex offenders are the measures used during research to determine the recidivism risk of a criminal. 1) Actuarial approach, 2) Static Risk Assessment Factors, and 3) Dynamic Risk assessment instruments.  Multiple research investigations have demonstrated that a singular evaluation is not the most effective method. Why? Multi-Risk Assessment Instruments You should give the names of a few. thereby provide a technique OK, but what technique? for identifying elements that may lead to recidivism. Utilizing various assessment instructions What does utilizing various assessment instructions mean? Are you saying that you’re supposed to follow instructions? If so, which instructions? Who wrote the instructions? increases the reliability and validity of the data. How? In order to analyze the sex offender demographic, techniques such as interviews, risk management, and an awareness of the instruments that may be examined against known criteria are utilized. You’re not using enough specificity.
