The Gutenberg Printing Press
The Gutenberg Printing press was invented in Europe in approximately the year 1450 and this invention is often described as the beginning of ‘The Print Revolution’.
Discuss some of the political, social and cultural consequences of early print; how far do you agree that print was a catalyst for ‘revolution’ in the early modern period?
Assessment two: Essay Value to module: 50%
Maximum word count: 2000 words
Choose ONE of the essay questions provided. (Meets Learning Objectives 1,
2, 3, & 4.)
In assessing your work we will we consider the extent to which you have
achieved all four learning outcomes listed on page 2. If you are not sure how
to address these criteria, be sure to ask us. In addition, you’ll be marked on
the following generic criteria:
? Quality of analysis and argument: ensure that you address/engage with
your chosen essay question; develop your argument on the basis of
and in relation to your readings/research. We also look at the
effectiveness of your use of relevant examples.
? Research: Use the reading list in this module guide to select suitable
sources. Always read as widely as possible and be discerning! – your
main sources/readings should always be academic to provide you with
the necessary knowledge, ideas, theories and arguments. Only on the
basis of engaging with such sources will you be able to critically
address/discuss the questions asked and be in a position to critically
evaluate popular media texts and examples.
? Quality of writing style: Use of academic style, grammar, overall
structure and coherence. Remember, you are asked to produce an
academic essay – NOT an ‘opinion’ piece as such or a journalistic
piece of writing). Ensure that your essay includes an introduction,
outlining the issues/questions at stake and summarizing the main
points/arguments to be developed in the main part of the essay. You
also need to provide a conclusion (summarizing the main findings;
possibly also highlighting issues that have emerged but would
necessitate further examination in the future and cannot be elaborated
on in this specific piece of work).
? Citation and referencing: ALWAYS reference your sources when
quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. Your referencing style needs
to be officially recognized (for example, adhere to Harvard) and
consistently applied. Do not forget/neglect your Bibliography: include all
sources referred to/used, be it books, chapters in edited collections,
journal articles (electronic or paper based), websites, newspaper
articles etc.
? All written work for assessment must be typed.
? Double-space your work, and provide wide (3cm) margins.
? Write the essay question at the top of page one.
? Each page must be numbered.
? Each page must include your student number.
? You must use the cover sheet provided by the School Office.
Please upload your essay on Turnitin through student central; the
submission portal will be available to you in due course.
The deadline for this assignment is 12 noon on Friday, 22 January 2016.
