Identifying a Need After reading the article “Identifying the Need” and reviewing the Afterschool Alliance website, create a plan to show the need for a new youth program in your community. In this plan, you will describe how you would find out the need for a new youth or family program in your local community. You will also describe the specific steps you would take (i.e., send out a survey, schedule a meeting with stakeholders, etc.), and describe actual questions you would ask, who you would ask, and what you would do with the results. To help you with this assignment, we are going to use this template to develop your plan. Before you begin to complete this template, be sure that you have read the “Identifying the Need” and reviewed the Afterschool Alliance website. Part 1. Think about your community – or a community that is of interest to you. This community could be where you live or where you work – or an area near you that is of interest to you. If you wanted to help the children and youth in that community, where would you begin to determine what kind of needs those children or youth may have? Remember, you are thinking about needs in terms of coming up with a program (an afterschool or summer program) that would meet those needs. NOTE: One idea should include some type of survey or a meeting to determine if there is a need. You must include a survey and/or a meeting in this list of three ideas so that you can later develop questions to ask participants. (Hint: You can get ideas from the “Identifying the Need” article.) List three ideas for ways to determine a need below: 1. Survey/meeting 2. 3. Now, look over your list of ideas. Think about who is represented in these ideas. These would be your stakeholders (those who would be directly or indirectly affected by your program). Stakeholders will also be the groups you would send any surveys to and/or ask to attend the meetings to determine if there is a need and what that need may be. List at least three stakeholders below (and remember your most important stakeholder is the population of kids you would want to serve -so I gave you that one!): Stakeholder #1: The kids I want my program to serve. Stakeholder #2: Stakeholder #3: Part 2. Now, we are going to use what you included in your list in Part 1 to come up with a more formal plan for determining a need in this community. Take each idea you listed in Part 1 and develop that idea into a paragraph that describes specifically what you would do. For example, if you listed something like “do a Google search to find out community demographics,” then you want to explain specifically what you would do in the search – what specifically would you search for (think back to the community you identified in Part 1 to help you – where would you search online to find out about the population statistics for your community?) Make sure you have at least one paragraph (you may have more as needed) for each idea you listed in Part 1. I am looking for details here, so I suggest that you think about a well-developed paragraph with 4-5 sentences minimum. These paragraphs equate to the specific steps you would take to determine if there is a need. Idea #1: Idea #2: Idea #3: Part 3. Now that you have described the steps you would take, we want to specifically identify the questions you would ask in a survey and/or at a meeting. List the questions would ask below. You should provide at least 5 questions that would give you a good idea of the needs for children or youth programs in the community you envisioned in Part 1. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Once you have your questions crafted, explain below how you intend to use these. Are they for a survey? Are they for a meeting? Both? What is your plan for having stakeholders respond to the questions? Will you mail/email surveys? Will you host community meetings? Both? Explanation of how I intend to use these questions: Part 4. It is time to think more specifically about the stakeholders – the groups of people in the community that you would need to survey, talk with, ask questions about needs. Go back to Part 1 and look at who you identified as the three key stakeholders. Who are they and why are they important as stakeholders? What role do they play in determining your need (why do you need to include them in identifying the need)? Describe at least two stakeholders in the space below: Example: The kids are youth ages 8 – 10. Most of them come from single-parent households and attend Title 1 schools in the district. Part 5. Now that you have questions (for a meeting or a survey or both) and you have a plan for using the questions, what will you do once you have gotten your responses? In other words, you now have the answers to your questions, how will you use those results? Describe in at least one paragraph below what you will do with the results you get from your surveys and/or information from your meeting(s) with the community/stakeholders: You need at least two references: one from the resources in Mod 1 and one that you locate in your own search.
