Briana Mental illness is how one reacts to a certain situation, rather it be stressful, scary or happy. It is how we think, feel and act (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). A person may feel anxiety when being put in a stressful situation not allowing them to think or act clearly when making decisions. A person experiencing mental illness that may be in a happy situation, may not react how another person may react. Their reaction may be sad instead of happy.  Concepts that I would consider before speaking with Jasmine are individual, interpersonal and social/cultural. I would want to know how Jasmine feels about herself without any thoughts of what others think or feel about her. I would evaluate how she interacts with others; as in does she have friends or play any sports. I would also want to evaluate her need or want to hang with friends or would she rather stay to herself. I would also evaluate her show views her culture and if there are things that she feels like she is forced to do because of fear of disappointment to her family.  Three questions that I would ask Jasmine about pertaining to her nervous system would be, in certain situations: Do you feel like your heart begins to race and or do you begin to sweat out of nowhere? How often does your mood change when a situation occurs? Do you feel out of control when it comes to your mood? Do you feel like you need to run away from the current situation that may be bothering you? Overall, I would want to evaluate if the patient feels like she does not have any control over her life, possible decisions and emotions. I would want to evaluate if the patient has situations that reoccur frequently that is influencing her mood and mental status. Information that I would want to obtain from the parents is what have they seen change in their daughters behavior lately. I would want to evaluate if they have noticed any changes in her eating habits. I would also want to obtain if there is any family history of mental illness.  An example of an ego defense mechanism statement from Jasmine: “I don’t have time to play sports or hang with friends, as my focus needs to be getting good grades so that I make my parents proud and graduate with highest honors.”  Question regarding reading material this week:  If systemic desensitization does not work to help a treat a patient, what other methods can be used to help the patient overcome irrational fears and anxiety?

Sheena In your opinion, what is mental illness? Mental illness to me is when someone finds it difficult to cope with their emotions, and behaviors when dealing with everyday tasks. People that have unstable thoughts and mood swings may have mental health problems (Mental Health Hope,2019). Being mentally ill affects so many aspects of a person’s life. It affects their appearance, mood, lifestyle, social life, and family/friends.  2. You are the nurse who will be interviewing the patient. What concepts do you need to consider before you prepare to go and speak with Jasmine? (Elaborate on at least 3) I would need to consider that the patient might have some things that she might not feel comfortable discussing in front of her parents. She is 18 and in high school, she might just be seeking attention, or something might be disturbing her at school since she has no prior issues with mental illness. She might be dealing with displaced emotions and she doesn’t know how to process them. 3. Based on the nervous system, what assessment questions could illuminate a potential mental health disorder? (Elaborate on at least 3). I would do a set of cognitive function and memory questions to see if she is alert and oriented. I can ask questions about the current date and year, where she work, her current location. I would also conduct an autonomic nervous system test to see if her body’s vital functions are intact. That includes asking questions about her breathing, body temperature, and digestion. Has she noticed anything different with her body functions? After we talk a little and get comfortable, I can ask more in-depth question. In example what are the thoughts, feelings or behaviors that have been troubling you, has a particular event brought on these symptoms, how often do you have the symptoms and what are you doing when you have them? 4. What information can be obtained from the parents? The parents can give me a more in-depth picture of how her life has been going. They can update me about her health and any concerning behaviors they have noticed. They can describe the group of friends she hangs with. They can also talk about their daughter’s support system. For example, does she have positive people who connect with her, spend time with her, and show a genuine interest in her well-being. If any family studies have been done to compare behavior. Family studies are used to compare whether a trait is more common among first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children) than among more distant relatives or the general population (Herzing University,n.d). 5. Give one example of an ego defense mechanism statement that Jasmine states during your interview. Rationalization is an ego defense I chose. It means justifying your wrong actions by providing reasons that seem reasonable (Parvez,2021). If you were unable to achieve something then instead of admitting that you failed and hurting your ego, you might say “I lost that fight but it wasn’t worth it anyway.” Add a question: After you have analyzed the content from the discussion board, please add a question to the end of your initial post regarding the reading material for the week.  Why is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) so important in the practice of nursing?
