Hello Everyone, 33-3051 Police and Sheriff’s Patrol Officers Maintain order and protect life and property by enforcing local, tribal, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Perform a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. Includes police officers working at educational institutions. As of May 2021:National employment: 665,380Employment RSE: 0.4%Mean hourly wage: $34.02Mean annual wage: $70,750Wage RSE: 0.3%10% Hourly Wage: $19.32 & Annual Wage: $40,19025% Hourly Wage: $24.34 & Annual Wage: $50,63050% Median: $31.06 & Annual: $64,61075% Hourly Wage: $39.35 & Annual Wage: $81,85090% Hourly Wage: $49.29 & Annual Wage: $102.530 The national estimate for the mean annual wage of a police officer is $70, 750.00. The national estimate for the median annual wage of a police officer is $64, 610.00. The salary range for police officers in my state is $64, 380.00 – $76, 360.00. The percentile chart shows the 50th percentile as the median salary and the value is the middle of the measurement of salaries. The salaries to the left are below the median and the salaries to the right are above the median. The salary for my state is between the 50th and 75th percentile of the median salary. The police officer salary for the state I live in falls in the range of the national median and mean. The median range and mean range are relatively close and are not greatly affected by any outliers. Based on this information I would remain in the state where I reside for employment as an officer. I would also like to know if this information is based on the top salary of police officers and how long it takes to attain these salaries. Civil servant jobs are usually based on a tier or step salary and are increased annually. The top salary increases with the years in service. One piece of information if I decided to move to another state would be how long it takes to make top salaries. The highest and lowest paid states in the case of police officer wages did not have a great effect on the mean and median for the United States. The highest-paying states are California, Washington, New Jersey, Alaska, and Illinois. The lowest-paying states are North and South Carolina, Georgia, South Dakota, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. If I was seeking employment from a potential employer I would use the median to measure the average earning because for a national survey I’m not totally sure it is taking into account the cost of living increases in the geographical location I was seeking employment. In addition when the distribution of salaries is skewed the median does a better job describing the center of the distribution than the mean. In this case, the median did a better job capturing the middle salary range because the distribution’s tail end could pull the mean away from the middle. Using the median is much more representative of the salaries of a police officer based on the data provided.   Doug

Prior to moving to Florida, I was a Diesel Mechanic for 18-wheeler trucks.  It was an experience to say the least because while I have been into car mechanics, I’ve never worked on 18-wheelers before.  49-3031 Bus and Truck Mechanics and Diesel Engine SpecialistsDiagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul buses and trucks, or maintain and repair any type of diesel engines. Includes mechanics working primarily with automobile or marine diesel engines. As of May 2021: National employment: 261,420Employment RSE: 1.1%Mean hourly wage: $25.49Mean annual wage: $53,020Wage RSE: 0.3%10% Hourly Wage: $17.18 & Annual Wage: $35,73025% Hourly Wage: $20.00 & Annual Wage: $41,60050% Median: $23.41 & Annual: $48,69075% Hourly Wage: $29.35 & Annual Wage: $61,05090% Hourly Wage: $36.61 & Annual Wage: $76,150 Part 2 Highest paying states include: Alaska, Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, North Dakota, Minnesota, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland Lowest paying states include: Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. Step 3 Include the following in your discussion post: Share the information you found in steps 1 and 2. Discuss your interpretation of the statistics you recorded in Part 1. Percentiles: I do not have knowledge on how much mechanics get paid nationally, but I do know in Hawaii, diesel mechanics get paid well. Certification is not necessary in Hawaii for automobile mechanics, but it is an added incentive for higher payment.  I did not need certification to be a diesel mechanic for my former employment, but I sure do need it now that I am in the mainland.  Otherwise, my pay will not match my skills because I do not have the proper education and certification.  All I have is the word of my previous employer.  However, based on the information, the minimum (10%) hourly wage is believable and for the maximum (90%), I believe it is shorted.  Mean: The average is honestly disappointing to see. Average salary for a diesel mechanic nationally is $25.49 when they are crucial for all 18-wheeler and bus transportation in maintenance.  Without the mechanics, how will these large transportation vehicles do their job? Places will not get gas, food, ice, and people will not have a means of transportation publicly.  It is a shame.  Median: The median is honestly in my opinion, short. I feel like the median should be the minimum.  How different are the salaries shown in the map of states? My state has ranges of salaries between $51,170-$56,430. I would not consider moving to another state based on this information because it coincides with the cost of living here.  The only way I would consider moving is if the pay outweighs the cost of living by at least 20%.  What effect do the lowest paid and highest paid states have on the calculation of the mean and median for the United States? The lowest paying states have an affect on the mean and median because it shifts.  If the lowest were to increase by $10,000, everything would increase.  Same goes for the highest.  If the highest were to decrease by $10,000, the mean and median would also decrease.  Suppose you were asked by a potential employer to request a salary. Which is the best measure to use to find “average” earnings for your occupation? Explain your answer. I would not base my answer on a national standpoint, but rather state wide.  I would look at the average hourly and annual wage for the state I live in and work my way from there.  National information does not pertain to my current employment, it is just good knowledge to have in my opinion.  I would ask for a wage that was in the q3 of my states hourly average wage or annual.  I would look at the National information when deciding where to live, should I ever plan to move out of state.  National information for this is also good for statistics for the industry.  If I were in a position where I could change the wages I would have to look on a national level.  Thank you,  Bryan
