Progress Report I

The company I am working for is called Formosa Plastics Corporation. It has operations in many areas and countries, such as China, Thailand, and the States. The unit I work in is an operation producing polypropylene pellets in Texas. We use petroleum (propylene) in Texas locally as the major raw material. Meanwhile, we demand other materials from all over the world. For example, the catalyst is from Japan; the additives for different grades of products are from Mexico, India, and Korea, etc.; and vendors providing equipment are from China, Canada, Germany, and Japan, etc. One of the problems that our unit is facing is the expiration of a time sensitive additive for a grade of product. This product is a food contacting grade, which by FDA’s regulation the additive should be used within 90 days of its production. The additive is manufactured in India, which requires 30 days of shipping period to Texas. Moreover, the using of the additive involves factors like warehouse management, production schedule, and in-unit handling. Thus, there are often expired additive that wasted. I am hoping I can use the knowledge learned from this class to solve the problem. I think the most important issue is to improve the management method in handling the additive before it expires
