Job design is “the act of specifying the contents and methods of jobs (Stevenson, 297). This process breaks down and simplifies the position. Job design is focused on who will do the job, what will be done, where the job will be done, and how the job will be performed (Stevenson, 297). The goal of job design is to boost productivity, safety, and quality of life (Stevenson, 297). It can be broken down into two main approaches- efficiency and behavioral. Efficiency focuses on the logical approach while behavioral focuses on satisfaction of wants and needs (Stevenson. 297).
A manufacturing company can design jobs that balance efficiency and human development by using behavioral job design approaches. Employee engagement and increased productivity are linked (Levenson, 2016). The behavioral approach pulls employee engagement by making jobs more interesting and meaningful (Stevenson, 298). Behavioral job design increases employee engagement though the increase in motivational power provided by the improvement in the quality of work life (Stevenson, 299).
Scripture says that as a supervisor or manager it is important to be respectful and understanding. Colossians 4:1 says “Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven (ESV).” It is important to make employees happy because they have the power to be more efficient and propel the business into prosperity. On a company-wide level it is important to be generous and reward the efforts of those that work for you; this generosity will pay off and be rewarding. Luke 6:38 says “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you (ESV).”
