With your instructor, examine the classroom and the school and record on the data table any sources of indoor pollution. These may include, but not limited to the following:

· Drinking fountains release chloroform off-gassing chlorine treated water

· Floor mats at the entryways have particles of dust, fungal spores, lead, arsenic from soil, herbicides and/or fungicides – all of which are taken up into the air ventilation system.

· The air ventilation system takes up and traps the particulate contaminates, giving the fungal and bacterial spores a substrate (support or base) upon which to multiply.

· A cleaning closet or any surface that has just been cleaned may have chemicals such as ammonia, trichloroethane, paradichlorobenzene and VOC’s.

· Air fresheners in bathrooms contain a VOC called paradichlorobenzene and other VOC’s.

· Photocopy machines release ozone, chloroform, formaldehyde and other chemicals.

· Dry cleaned clothing contains tetrachloroethylene

· New carpet and furniture off-gasses formaldehyde, chloroform, fiberglass and styrene.

· Cigarettes produce carbon monoxide, arsenic, benzo-pyrene, cadmium, VOC’s and particulate matter.

· Cracks in the foundation can allow radon gas to enter the building.

· Ceiling times, floor tiles and pipe insulation may have asbestos, fiberglass and vinyl chloride.

· Combustion sources may emit carbon monoxide, benzene/gasoline, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.

· Pesticides or fungicides are sources of cadmium, mercury and VOC’s.

· Paints, stains and building putty may contain lead, methylene chloride, VOC’s, benzene or toluene.

· Areas with leaks often lead to mold.
