1. Showing vs. Telling: Different authors make different stylistic choices when conveying information in their writing, and these choices create different experiences for their readers. Your goal here is to look at the different ways authors narrate moments of high emotion or realization (epiphanies).

First, reread the paragraph in “Reeling for the Empire” that begins on the bottom of page 35 and continues to about the middle of page 36. In this paragraph, Kitsune tells the story of the moment when, during her tea ceremony with the Agent, she first realized something was wrong. Here’s the passage:

“Something bad was coming—the stench of a bad and thickening future was everywhere in that room. The bad thing was right under my nose, crinkling its little legs at me” (Russell 35-36).

Then, reread the very end of “Adventure,” in which Alice has a realization that she may never find companionship. Here’s the passage:

“When she got into bed she buried her face in the pillow and wept brokenheartedly. ‘What is the matter with me? I will do something dreadful if I am not careful,’ she thought, and turning her face to the wall, began trying to force herself to face bravely the fact that many people must live and die alone, even in Winesburg” (Anderson 120).

Question: What is the main difference between the way that Russell narrates a moment of realization and the way that Sherwood Anderson narrates a moment of realization? Think about qualitative differences, such word choice, as well as use of description or figurative language, or lack thereof. HOW, in her writing, does Russell inform her readers that a realization is going on? HOW does Anderson do the same in his writing?

2. Now, apply: Find a passage in “Reeling for the Empire” that you feel depicts the feeling of isolation. Now find a passage in “Adventure” that you feel depicts the feeling of isolation. Compare and contrast the different ways (via description, showing, and telling) that Russell and Anderson narrate the same thing.
