Please respond to the following statement:

As technology has advanced in our country, law enforcement members needed to advance as well, in their knowledge of different aspects of looking at crime, in their treatment of those who are different culturally, economically, their color, race, religion, and political affiliation, etc., and in the fact that their behavior or misbehavior not only sends the right or wrong message, but now there is the ability for the whole world to watch, read about it, and judge the department of corrections through social media. Integrated diversity was never this prevalent in the past as it is today. There is a real need for society to once again look up to all those who are a part of criminal justice, especially corrections.

With corrections, officers must present themselves as professionals because in many cases they are dealing with offenders who may have the opportunity to start a new life through probation and rehabilitation, further education, strict rules they must follow, and other life changes that will keep them out of the cycle of recidivism. A professional corrections officer can change lives, especially in juvenile offenders and those first-time offenders. A corrections officer who shows an interest in the offender’s future along with professionally enforcing the rules and laws of probation and rehabilitation shows the right way to behave by example, and by being knowledgeable of situations that may arise where an educated decision is made, not an educated guess. The values and integrity the corrections officers follow could rub off on the offender and, along with the other tools available, might lead them to a better life in and for society.
