Police can play the public servant or crime fighter role depending on which strategy of policing they feel is best. There’s various influencing factors which can help control which they may opt for. Popular policing strategies that best support these two roles are preventative policing, community-oriented and aggressive order maintenance.

Pertaining to the public servant role, community-oriented policing would best support this as they make a strong effort to involve the community into policing. Police are putting in effort to better understand the needs of the community and are seeking to collaborate with them in order to create a physical presence while also building relationships. This makes them a public servant as they are trying to fulfill the needs of the public to the best of their ability (Masters et al., 2021).

On the other hand, police can also play a crime fighter role where they may take part in a more aggressive, proactive style of policing. Both preventative and aggressive order maintenance styles of policing would support this role. Preventative policing ensures a presence is made through random patrols and seeks to actively reduce street crime which supports the crime fighting role as they constantly are trying to act as a deterrent. Aggressive order maintenance is also a style of policing that actively reduces crime as it is a zero tolerance method. They constantly are looking to focus on offenses that affect life quality and seek out minor public offenses. They feel that by constantly fixing problems within the community, crime will eventually move out of the area (Masters et al., 2021).

Despite there being various strategies amongst every officer, there is still one subculture that they all become a part of. As of recent time though, the problems residing within these subcultures and the need for change is being recognized. Strategies are starting to be implemented for both new and older officers as they understand “law enforcement culture should embrace a guardian—rather than a warrior—mindset” (Cohen, 2017) which is believed to build more trust. In order to do this, agencies are starting to implement policies encouraging a change in culture which enforces the acknowledgement and exposure of problems (Cohen, 2017).

Legalism and licentiousness are two biblical themes that can interfere with one’s role as a police officer. Legalism is essentially the misapplication of law as individuals would remove the proper context which can lead to the violation of other laws. Often, from a religious standpoint, individuals strictly adhere to their own biblical interpretations. Licentiousness is essentially the opposite of legalism as there is a lack of moral restraints. These individuals lack conformity and disregard possible consequences. Both of these biblical themes may influence an officer depending on if they fall into one of these categories which could also influence how they go about policing. The role they play, whether it be a public servant or crime fighter could be determined if they fall more into legalism or licentiousness. Those are who more into legalism may play a larger role as a public servant as they may want to ensure more peace is being kept and rules are being followed. Licentious individuals may be more likely to play a crime fighter role. If they do not care about consequences, they may be willing to take more risks and seek more of a thrill which could lead to an aggressive policing style.

I think that people get confused by the definition of public servant or really what it means to be a public servant. We tend to glorify it and come up with many expectations of what it entails based upon what the title represents. Which isn’t wrong. It does have a lot to do with what we expect police officers to do as part of their daily jobs, however, being a public servant can just simply be defined as “a government worker.” It’s really that simple. Are police public servants? In the vaguest definition – yes. Now when we think of a public servant we tend to add a bunch of expectations into that title and hope that they actually tend to and care for the community and public they are serving. In this case policing. Now we can explore the real reason police officers exist…to fight crime.

A crime fighter is more appropriate terminology when referring specifically to police officers because it’s really the guts and glory of what they do. …”any person, as a law-enforcement officer or government official, who works to prevent crime or to enforce criminal laws) (Webster Dictionary). Now although both of these terms are used to describe police officers they hold very different definitions. For example, being a public servant could amount to a number of things that an officer may do. They might help a lost child find their parent after being separated in a busy store or they might help with traffic control on a busy street when the stop lights aren’t working. These are all public service actions that a police officer might feel inclined to do because of their job title. But fighting crime is much different. It’s dangerous, it takes communication and tactic and training and is used when crimes have been committed – they seek justice for whatever has occurred. The two definitions are very different however they both clearly describe the role of police officers.

One of the largest reasons why people think that police subculture is breaking down is that many people feel as if they cannot trust law enforcement, they do not make the most ethical decisions and they misuse their power. Because of this there is a huge gap between communities and law enforcement and it also makes it so that some people won’t even report crimes that have been committed because they do not feel as if anything will be done once reported or it will not be done correctly. Subculture is also breaking down because people feel as if cops can be dangerous, they are more in danger with the police officer than without, discrimination and they won’t be heard. It all boils down to lack of trust in our law enforcement. OVERVIEW
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the May, Can, Should model through analysis of a
specific U.S. economic or budgetary policy. An effective tool for finding this legislation is
through www.govtrack.us and the cost of the legislation through the Congressional Budget
Office at www.cbo.gov.
INSTRUCTIONS
For the analysis, this is best done in the following manner:

Application of the Biblical principles – when discussing the topic of the week, make sure
to apply the Biblical principles discussed in question 1 of the Synthesis paper to the specific
policy that you’re discussing. How does it meet natural law, inalienable rights, federalism, etc.?
Constitutional authority – what is the Constitutional authority for the federal government
to get involved? Avoid the use of the General Welfare clause as it becomes a catch-all for
anything that a politician wants to get passed.
Can
Political feasibility – what is the likelihood that the policy will become law? What is the
political and social support for the policy?
Financial feasibility – what is the policy expected to do to the national debt or spending?
For example, the new COVID stimulus just put us another $2 trillion in debt but was widely
supported by both politicians and the public.
Practical feasibility – what are the logistical resources needed for implementation
(buildings, personnel, new programs, etc.) and what are the steps for implementation (ex; the
Affordable Care Act needed functional websites in order to be implemented, the lack of these
created severe problems with implementation).
Should
Relate this back to specific Biblical and Constitutional authorities and discuss whether or
not the policy should be supported based on this and the feasibility of implementation.
The goal of this is to critically analyze an economic policy to objectively determine if the
federal government should be legitimately involved in the policy being discussed and if the
policy is right for the country.
You are expected to submit a 1 1/2–2-page paper (not including the title page, abstract, and
reference page) in current APA format in which the May-Can-Should model is applied in the
context of the policy focus. Be certain to emphasize a focused analysis of a particular federal
policy (either already implemented or proposed) chosen from the policy concentration area for
the assigned module. You must include citations from:
1. all of the required reading and presentations from the assigned module/week
2. all relevant sources from Module 1: Week 1 and Module 2: Week 2 (you MUST use the
“Biblical Principles of Government” article), and
