A few years ago I had several students in my office with some questions. Afterward, one of them asked, “So, what comes after calculus?” I thought that was a really interesting question so we spent some time talking about some specific areas that I thought would be interesting to engineering students, which most of those students were. In previous conversations, I’ve discovered that many students seem to think that algebra is essentially all there is to mathematics. It’s unfortunate that secondary schools (public and private) as well as the college/university system leave students with that impression. What we call algebra is only a small piece of a much larger pie. As we come up to the end of the course, I know that some of you will move on to other subjects and some of you will end your math progression here. Before that happens, I’d like to take some time to make everyone aware of the bigger picture.
