Our aim is to use social network and content analysis to find out about a user group. In order to design or market, we wish to know more about the language, attitudes, needs, and habits of our user group. To access social network data, we will use the convention of the hashtag and we will collect social network messages associated with certain hashtag handles.
Here are potential topics:
a. What issues are important to VU international students? Write a report that outlines the main concerns of international students in Melbourne, according to the Twittersphere.
b. What issues are important to ‘insert your area of practice/a company you wish to work for’?
c. Your choice… How can this topic work as a portfolio piece for you?
Sometimes investigating Tweets that use two or more handles can be revealing. I will provide an example in class.
Please feel free to be experimental in your use of Twitter handles, the emphasis is on the analysis. It is not necessary to have capture information that exactly replicates our target group. Feel free to come up with something surprising.
Use one twitter feed to jump off to other Twitter handles. I will provide an example in class.
In the analytics section include example quotes from the data. Example quotes from the Twitter users can help back up your claims.
Steps: (Please don’t ‘stress out’ finding interesting data or analysis. Often the answer is straightforward and in front of you.)
Explore twitter handles that you think will produce interesting data. Search within Twitter because it is quicker.
When you find data you find interesting, download it using one of our tools.
Clean the data.
Create a codebook.
Identify what the data is telling you. Develop one, two or three points of interest.
Write these points up, provide example tweets for the reader. This will form your analysis section.
