Assignment: For this writing, discuss what these three stories have in common. Then discuss what the common solution is for all three. Be specific. Write at least 300 words answering these two questions. Make sure your introduction is interesting, and your conclusion has a call to action. And most importantly, have fun.
Here are three true stories:
1. A young woman from a poor family in Chula Vista won a scholarship to study at a very expensive university in Los Angeles. When she returned home at the end of the first semester, her mother was fixing a big dinner to celebrate her success. The mother said to her daughter, “Dinner won‘t be ready for another hour. Why don‘t you lay down and rest for a while. I‘ll call you when dinner is ready.” The daughter replied, “You mean lie down.” Her father jumped up from his chair and, for the first time in her life, slapped his daughter across her face. “Don‘t ever correct your mother‘s grammar again,” he said.
2. Bruce Rose, an African-American student at SDSU lived in the dorm where I was a teaching assistant while I was in grad school. Bruce loved going to college, but was also looking forward to returning to his home in Pasadena for the summer. The next September, when he returned to the dorm, I asked him how his summer had been. He replied, “Fine. But I had a little trouble fitting back in with my friends. They kept telling me I was fake. ‘They said I was turning into a snob because of the way I talked’.”
3. About two weeks into the semester a student in English 101 at San Diego Mesa College waited to talk to the instructor at the end of class. “I won‘t be coming back,” he said. “I‘m dropping out of school.” The concerned teacher asked why. The student replied, “I don‘t want to be like you people.”
