NUR 3119: Professional Roles & Dimensions of Nursing Practice Pensacola State College Department of Health Sciences RN-BSN Program Instructions for The Nurse Theorist Project (20% of the Overall Course Grade) Project Overview: You will create a paper illustrating the life and work of a nurse theorist of your choice. Your paper must include all of these five (5) following focal points: A description of the background of the theorist, such as life experiences, beliefs, and education An overview of the social changes that were going on at the time An explanation of the overall theme and main ideas of the theory A definition of the four nursing metaparadigms, which are nursing, person, health, and environment, as postulated by the theorist An example of how the theory may be useful in current nursing practice Form of submission: An APA paper: Should be at least 3 pages long but not to exceed 5 page (double-spaced), excluding the title and reference pages. How to Start: Review chapter 8 in your textbook to reacquaint yourself with all the names of nurse theorists and their nursing theories. The list of nurse theorists is also provided on the last page of these instructions. Choose one theorist whom you prefer to further explore about her theory, life, and work. Start researching for information about the theorist. Make sure that the information you have obtained covers all the five focal elements listed above. Making a rough outline based on the information you have found should help identify the information you are missing. If you cannot find information to cover certain aspects required for your presentation, you should consider choosing a new theorist to work on. Not discussing all the elements required for the paper/presentation will negatively affect your grade (also see the assignment’s grading scale posted in a separate link). And again, if you need to reselect a theorist, make sure you have all needed information about the theorist to complete all five focal points required for the assignment. When you start working on your presentation, make sure you follow strictly the instructions specifically to the form of presentation you have chosen. Specific Instructions for a Paper: Your paper must be a minimum of 3 pages but not longer than 5 pages in length (excluding the title page and the reference page), double spaced, with 1” margins for all 4 sides and font size of either 11 or 12 (this instruction page has 1-inch margins, 1.15 spaced, using Times New Roman font size of 12). Write clearly and concisely and demonstrate logical connections within and between each section of the paper. Do not write in the first person (e.g., I, me). Instead, write in third person. If unsure how, look in the Other Resources module for the link to guide you how. Use correct grammar, spellings, and punctuation throughout the paper. Follow strictly the correct APA format and style for both in-text citations and reference list. Consult the APA Manual (7th ed.), APA Style Guide to e-References (7th ed.), and/or the APA Format and Style Guide if necessary. Begin your paper with a title page with a Running head and format that is the APA. Review the Sample Title Page and Format for Your Paper/Project link posted within the Other Resources module. Review the entire document for all the explanation and example so that you will produce a paper in a correct APA format and style. Also review the Example Guideline – How to create the title page posted within the Other Resources module so that you know exactly how to produce a title page in correct APA. Provide an appropriate heading for each section of your paper, including conclusion. Do not write and submit a multiple-pages paper without headings. Documents that contain multiple pages with no headings are unacceptable. The required sections in the Project Grading Scale can be used as a guideline for the sections of your paper. Number all pages, including the reference page. Begin your reference list on a new page. Submit your project in a Word or a pdf only. Instructions for Paper: Your paper must include all five (5) focal points listed under the project overview, plus introduction and conclusion. Review the required sections of the paper in the assignment’s grading scale posted in a separate link in the Portfolio Project module. Provide a minimum of three (3) references. At least one (1) of the references must be from a textbook, book, or an article from a peer-reviewed journal (i.e., all the references cannot be from only internet websites). Your paper must follow the correct APA format for both in-text citations and the reference list: When the information is from a source or the idea is not yours, cite the source. The reference list must be complete. That is, all the sources cited in texts must be listed on the reference list, and vice versa. Do not copy a citation from the source you are using and paste it to your work unless you have already checked that the citation is in correct APA format. Your paper must be run through Turnitin with all necessary revisions made prior to submitting it to the project dropbox for grade. Preforming Literature Searches: There are ways to search for literature for your project. You may use internet search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo) for journal articles or websites that have the information you are looking for. However, be aware of sources that are not acceptable for use for your project and other academic work (see below). You are strongly encouraged to use the library databases available through the Pensacola State College (PSC) BSN library website. To perform searches through the PSC library website: Log on to the BSN library website from any computer to gain access to our library databases of your choice, such as CINAHL, MEDLINE, and OVID. Start performing a search using keywords, such as the name of your selected theorist. Most journal articles on these databases are available in full-texts, downloadable, and can be saved to your computer (with no cost) for further reading or for submitting along with your assignment in case your instructor needs to see the actual articles. If you are not sure how to perform a search on the library databases, check out the link “RN-BSN Library and How to do a Literature Search” provided under the Other Resources module. Submission and Due Date: Submit your portfolio project as an attachment through a drop box located within the “NUR 3119 Portfolio Project” module (located below Week 5 module). The due date for this portfolio project is located in the course calendar. Since you have about 2 months to work on this project, this project may not be submitted late. After this date and time, the drop box will become inaccessible for submission. Any submissions past this date and time will not be accepted through other means and a zero (0) will be assigned for the project. Acceptable Resources for Academic Papers: Scholarly resources, such as textbooks, articles from professional journals (preferably the peer-reviewed ones). Consult Acceptable Resources for Academic Work posted on the course under the Resources on APA and Writing Guidelines module for more information. Resources NOT acceptable for Academic Papers: Resources that are informational in nature, such as Wikipedia, About.com, etc. Resources posted by an individual as part of their own school work. Resources posted by an individual or group of persons that reflects their opinion only or encompasses unsubstantiated or unsupported information (not based on research or not including a literature review or references) such as blogs, Wikis, Discussion Boards/Forums, or social media resources. Social media, such as Facebook, Twitter. Other Useful Resources for Your Project: Check out the APA Resources and Other Resources Modules for the resources you may need for your work: Sample Title Page and Format for Your Paper/Project (with an example of a paper in the correct format in it) How to Create a Title Page for Your Project in APA How to Write in Third Person Practice Dropbox for Turnitin Since this project is your first academic work in forever to many of you, you are encouraged to work on this project early.
